Drama Follows Me

4 Jun

I have something called Reactive Hypoglycemia.

Many family members on my mother’s side of the family have hypoglycemia. I was the lucky one (not) who drew the short straw, and gets to pay extra close attention to the amount of sugar, simple carbohydrates, fruit, and certain vegetables that I eat.

Eating carefully, and frequently through the day is a big part of managing this…condition? And boy can you tell when I need to eat.

Drama!!!

  • I have a short fuse.
  • Everything is difficult.
  • Everyone is an idiot.
  • Everyone is wrong.
  • The sky is falling!

Hand me a few baby carrots and a couple servings of cheese and I’ll be right as rain in 20 minutes. Just try not to say anything remotely inaccurate in those 20 minutes. I’ve tried to control my tongue while swinging low on blood sugar, it doesn’t work well. Sorry.

But just so you get a humorous picture of what my poor family (mostly husband) has to put up with on a regular basis, here is a little audio/visual example.

(some of my friends and family may also agree that this little video could apply equally to the typical ‘Terrible Twos’ sufferer)

Drama follows me, too, although it seems to have more to do with vitamin deficiencies and artificial stuff.

Vitamin deficiencies? Like you have trouble getting enough to suit your system? Or your body has difficulties assimilating them?

I am really glad I don’t have allergies (food or otherwise). I try to avoid artificial sweeteners, caffeine, refined sugar, too much fructose, and simple carbohydrates are really limited. Although Thursdays, birthdays and holidays seem to be my splurge days. Good birthday cake, and pumpkin pie are not to be missed. 🙂 Just pass me the dill pickles and some chicken and I should be fine. lol

I was wondering about the dill pickle thing. Is there something in them that help lower the glycemic index?

For a long time I didn’t realize that the RDA on a vitamin might be just barely enough to prevent a specific disease. So I would take vitamins, think I was all good, and still be in very bad shape. It took a lot of research to figure out what was wrong.

The vinegar in pickles helps slow down the absorption of simple sugars into the blood stream. Many people with diabetes and hypoglycemia will, say, make sure they have some slices of pickle in their ham and cheese sandwich to slow down the body’s reaction to the bread.
Dill pickles work for me flavor wise. Sweet, and hamburger pickles do not work, simply because there is sugar in their ingredients.
I have actually successfully shared a banana split with my mother by eating a bite of dill pickle between spoonfuls. *sigh* It was sooo good!

Yes, the RDA on vitamins is just enough to keep deficiency diseases at bay.
I have found, recently, that the RDA of vitamin C is not enough for my body. I have to take at least 3 times that (180 mg) to keep from getting the first symptoms of scurvy (yes, that is the disease caused by lack of sufficient vitamin C that sailors used to get). My mom has taken 2,000mg daily for years. It really depends on your body.

Right this moment I am eating a snack of red delicious (so delicious) apple, 2 ounces of colby-jack cheese, and small slices of a dill pickle spear, and some decaf English Breakfast tea. It’s kind of become my afternoon tea. 🙂

          ( Hey ReGi, 4 edits. 🙂 lol )

            Edits. LOL!

Now I have a reason to buy pickles all the time. 😀 No blood sugar issues yet, but diabetes runs on both sides of the family. Sounds like as good an excuse as any to me.
