Surviving Camp Moose Creek, pt. 2

31 Jul

Here’s the second installment of the story I’ve been writing:

.

Dear diary,

.

Today’s food was even more disappointing than the previous three days.  The baked eggs with breakfast were gray and spongy.  Lunch consisted of pigs in soggy blankets and limp carrot sticks.  Dinner was…  I’m not sure what that was.  It looked like beef stroganoff but smelled like severely overcooked Brussels sprouts.  I got a glare and an eye roll from one of the counselors when she saw me taking a photo of tonight’s dinner.  What they don’t know is that I have discovered that the main office on the campground has an unsecured wifi signal.  This discovery was made as I hid among the buildings pylons to escape having to play softball again today.  I had no sooner gotten comfortable than my phone chimed in that there was a wifi signal available.  So I spent a comfortable hour updating my blog.

I believe this will become something of an oasis for me.

.

About the coffee, I had almost made it out the front door of the mess hall with approximately 4 ounces in a Styrofoam cup when one of the dangerously hyper active staffers waylaid me and said that caffeine would not be good for me.  She then proceeded to pour a tablespoon of sugar, a ¼ cup of cream in it and drink it herself.  I’m coming to the conclusion that perhaps they do not wish to be here anymore than I do.

.

.

Dear Diary,

.

Today (day 5) has gone a lot better, with a quiet hiding place I have not been subjected to playing any sports, or participating in their creativity crushing version of ‘crafts’. Why one is not allowed to make a lanyard for their identification badge instead of the mind-meltingly simple bracelet I have yet to understand.

.

My cousin, Wilbur (he and I are convinced that yes, his parents do hate him), has the car for the weekend. He was a little surprised to discover through my blog that I had been dumped in the middle of nowhere without any allergy medication. He will be swinging by on his way to the lake, and we have made plans for him to hide a box of antihistamines in a hollow of a log just outside the camp entrance. This means that tomorrow morning I must go on the bike ride, but it’s a worthy cause. Adequate rest has been illusive these past several nights due to congestion, and I am developing a cough. Hopefully the second will clear up a day or two after starting on the pills. My one fear is that it may become apparent that some of my discomfort has been abated, and they will attempt to remedy the situation.

.

The food has not improved. However, due to my regular purchasing schedule one of the young ladies who works in the snack shack has begun assembling my purchases the moment she sees me in line. This is somewhat surprising. I had not realized that I was ordering the same things for each meal. However, after only three days she has picked up on my pattern and has put another small measure of comfort in my otherwise torturous experience.

.

That’s it for today! Let me know what you think.  🙂

They are sooo cute!

And mama would stomp you into mush in you got anywhere near them.  lol  Strictly a “Yup, they’re cute, from way over here” thing.

Enjoy your Wednesday!

Surviving Camp Moose Creek, Pt. 1

30 Jul

This is the first bit of the story I have been working on to entertain you while I help with crafts at Vacation Bible School at a friend’s church.

I’ve had fun writing it so far, and am now up do day seven of his camp experience.

Let me know what you think so far. 🙂

*            *            *

Dear diary,

I have survived the first day of this thing they call “summer camp”.  I’m at a loss as to why anyone would refer to this as fun.

Below is a list of things which already irritate me about this ‘experience’.

  •     Most of the activities take place outside.  * shudder *
  •      My mother seems to have forgotten that I am allergic to pine trees
  •      The lake is heavily guarded by mosquitoes

 .

It may take a bit of investigation but preliminary findings suggest that the entire camp staff it is on crack or some other amphetamine.  Normal people are just not that excited about the prospect of basket weaving and braided friendship bracelets.

 .

 .

Dear diary,

 .

Day two of summer camp has been…  Endured.  I now have a black eye from a softball, a bruised shin from a field hockey stick, and perpetually running sinuses from being around my one and only identified allergen – pine trees.

I have found no concrete evidence in the theory that the camp staff is on an amphetamine.  Although I begin to suspect that their coffee is laced with it.  I must obtain a sample for testing.

 .

 .

Dear diary,

 .

The third day of summer camp is now behind me.  I’m seriously considering a means of escape.  I attempted to walk the parameter today, but was detoured three times by camp staffers.  It would seem that I’m not the first camper to consider this strategy.

 .

I hope that the food improves.  Thankfully my mother provided a generous stipend for purchasing a camp T-shirt and bike rentals.  If the camp kitchen continues with this inadequate fare I may end up spending the entirety of it on apples and bags of nuts from the snack shack.  Now that I think about it, perhaps this is their intention.

Continuing on the subject of the kitchen, I regret to have to say I have been unable to procure a sample of the coffee.  This may take more work than I’d previously thought.

.

*            *            *

What do you think so far?

.

On another note, I am now able to go without my wrist brace for small amounts of time. It still doesn’t want to do much, but typing almost seems therapeutic. Who am I to stand in the way of ‘physical therapy’?

MMM… The Parent Rap

28 Jul

It’s another Monday!

Therefore it is time for Mirth and Music Monday!  Yay!!!

.

I came across this one and after giggling at it by myself (a couple times. What?)   I figured I would be a good friend and share. My mama didn’t raise no fool.

(Do you have any idea how hard it is to leave that last sentence alone? It hurts!)

On to the entertainment!

Now go forth and have a great parenting week, …or pet owner, or office manager…or… er, yeah.

Just make a good one, alright?

A Very Bossy Poem

27 Jul

Reblogging myself.

.
It’s nice when you look back over your work several months later and it still looks good to you. It doesn’t always happen, but it’s really nice when you can re-read something of your own and not even slightly cringe.

.
May all our projects turn out so well.  🙂

Rose's Road

Lucky Ducky

In the middle of the night, I was awakened by a poem forming in my mind.  It would not leave me alone.  So, in self-defense, I wrote it down.  It took several attempts at sleep to get all the stanzas onto paper.  Finally, it seemed that I was done.  But no, by that time I needed to eat something (I had a headache. One of the many warning signals I receive when my blood sugar is low).  Even then, rest did not come.  This poem is demanding to be read by many, and would not let me go until I had promised to put it on my blog.

So here it is.  Let me know what you think of it.

I…am going to take a nap.

Shrinking To The Real Me

27 Jul
Where's my silver lining?

Where’s my silver lining?

.

From deep within

A cry begins.

There is no escape

From this monstrous shape.

I see what is true,

It cannot continue.

This dress size you see

Is not the real me.

The workouts may hurt,

And the diet is work,

But I will not fail

To step on the scale.

My husband deserves

A woman with curves.

It will take some time,

For I’ve passed size nine,

But I will persevere

In shrinking my rear.

Because I miss that black dress

That made my husband confess

That his wife is a 10,

And he, the luckiest of men.

*            *            *

I did not realize how painful this poem is until I read it aloud (a crucial step in my proof-reading).

I almost cried.

I really liked being the trophy wife, his midlife crisis,…being the reason this former bachelor’s friends did a double take when he introduced his wife. Perhaps it’s my age catching up with me, or the fact that we can’t afford to go to places that call for tall heels and slinky dresses, but it is glaringly obvious that this woman/wife needs to find a way to recapture some of the sexy that she forgot she has.

But for now, I am going to go to bed and try not to cry myself to sleep. Tomorrow is going to be another busy day and I’m going to need all the rest I can get.

.

Nope, I think the crying is going to happen.

Sorry pillow, you are going to get wet.

This Hangnail is Driving Me Crazy!!!

26 Jul

Now that I have that out of the way…

.

The only writing I accomplished today was adding a few paragraphs to a short story I’m thinking of using for blog posts next week.  I may actually stick with this plan, or I may pound out a several pager that will work even better (the night before VBS starts *eye roll*).  I’m never really sure about these things.

.

I was wondering why I feel so tired, but then I reviewed today’s events, now it makes sense.

Over the course of the day I’ve had a migraine, gone shopping twice, attended a meeting, read several stories to a niece, visited with two of my sisters, and helped my husband empty and defrost a deep freezer.  No wonder I feel so tired.  Turning in a little early sounds good.

.

Could the word ‘I’ have possibly been stuck in there a few more times?!?

.

Anyway…

I (lol) have a question for my beloved, eclectic, followers: if you were to steam punk a top hat, what two things would you consider essential?  Would you perhaps want a pair of goggles, or a small magnifying glass, a pocket watch on a chain, or is there something else which you would consider a steam punk necessity?

.

On another note…

Who here has read and loved a short children’s book called Sleeping Ugly?

.

And just for some amazingness:

Shopping… with 5 kids.  A brave woman. 🙂

Here are some of her thoughts about comments from fellow shoppers.

Magnificent Mommyhood

DSC07362

Why must we, as human beings, state the obvious?

I do it, I have caught myself many times doing this very thing.  Making comments like, “You’re bleeding” or “You look sick” to an individual who was quite (sometimes painfully) aware.

I remained blissfully unaware of the extent of this epidemic however, until sometime around the third (3rd!) kid.  As I have brought more and more children into “public” over the years, the number one comment I get (generally as I am carrying one child, chasing another and one or more is crying in the cart due to a sudden drop in the barometric pressure-or some other extremely valid reason) is, “You have your hands FULL!”

What I would like to say is, “REALLY?  YA THINK?”  I usually temper my response however, and say something like, “I sure do!”

The second most common response to my gaggle of children is, “Are they ALL yours?”

The Pain of Hunger

24 Jul

That gnawing need,

A painful rumble;

I just heard

My stomach grumble.

Food, I need

As you may guess.

An empty system

Makes me write less.

.

Soooooo hungry!

.

Good thing my Mr. Wonderful is cooking, then, huh?

Silly me has only had tea over the last several hours.

I’m thinking of writing a short story to portion out over next week while I’m helping out at a friend’s church for VBS (vacation Bible school). Any thoughts as to what I should write about?

I’m serious, I have nothing in mind yet, so a good suggestion could very well be acted upon.

(A small note here: Please only G rated topics. I have several followers who enjoy reading this blog with their little ones near by. I would like to keep it that way. Thank you.)

The Circle of Words, Among Other Things

23 Jul
From the Before to the After of a fit of inspired writing.

From the Before to the After, a fit of inspired writing.

.

Roiling and boiling these thoughts bubble deep.

While tossing and turning they occupy my sleep.

This is nothing new

I have no other view

Twisting and spinning they build new worlds.

An artificial life, my mind unfurls.

My mind stews

Waiting for cues

I can no longer contain the words

They fall out in one long surge

Thoughts glow

Words flow

My mind, left spent and reeling

Has a peculiar empty feeling

Perhaps a snack

And then a nap

.

Today felt more like a Sunday than a Monday.  After a morning spent surfing Facebook and Twitter, fiddling around but accomplishing nothing solid, I decided to try this speech to text program again.  For some odd reason it’s working much better today.  My fingers are crossed that this new trend will continue.

.

As you can see I managed to be creative today.  Along with this poem I have also crafted a little piece of flash fiction.  Steam punk flash fiction to be exact.  I did not realize that mini-stories could be so much fun to write!

.

Going back to the subject of Sunday, we went and saw the new movie REDS 2.  I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes shoot-em-ups but cannot stand blood and gore.  I’m kind of hoping for a third movie.  Did I say kind of? I meant really.

.

*the mic thumps, and the speakers squeak*

Do we have any steam punk fans in the audience tonight?

And…

For those of you who saw REDS 2 what are your thoughts?
