MMM… Procrastination – The Musical

30 Sep

Hey, look what I found for your Monday.

A song about procrastination called Procrastination to watch while you’re procrastinating. Wow!

(pssst! While this one is family friendly, not all of their stuff is clean and child appropriate. I would recommend caution when cruising through their videos.)

.

If you enjoyed this you can see more Mirth and Music Monday by going over to ReGi McClain’s blog. She’s the creator of this fun Monday meme. Not only does she post a MMM, she also has a little blue froggy thing on the right side of her blog page. Click on the top one and it will take you to a list of links of all the people playing along this week.

And if you like, you can add your own funny and musical post!

Two Nights Of Dancing? Yes, Please!

28 Sep

Tonight was a lot of fun. I went to the Senior Center dance and danced my feet off.

Poor Lonnie was stuck at home dealing with some plumbing issues. They’re not totally resolved yet, but that’s because there aren’t any 24 hour plumbing outfits around here. Suffice it to say, we have running water again, but a few things didn’t handle the no-water-then-actual-water-pressure situation very well. We’re not reaching for water wings and swim fins, but there was a leak.

(I’m just glad I married someone who can deal with this sort of stuff, because I have no clue.)

So, the dance drew a lot of new people from around the area. Unfortunately there were more women than men.  That meant that every man there was kept dancing just about the entire time. The husbands were doing a wonderful job of making sure that no single lady sat for too long, and the wives did a lovely job of making sure the other ladies knew they were comfortable with it.

We had 3 fiddle players taking turns and duets through the evening, and even a harmonica player for one song. The regular band was in fine form, and absorbed the guest musicians with wonderful grace and harmony.

The only complaint I had about the evening was that I really should start bringing some food with protein in it for the intermission meal. I am thinking that everyone got together and made Friday night their cheat day, because we have cookies, cakes and gelatin desserts coming out our ears. Everyone else really enjoys the yummy sugar, but I really need to watch it with that kind of stuff, especially when I’m doing a physical activity. Believe it or not, waltzing and the Texas two-step are a lot of exercise. Especially when you’re only getting to sit down for one dance in four.

I need the exercise, so I’m not going to complain.  🙂

.

Tomorrow night (by the time you’re reading this it will be tonight) I am joining in the festivities of a bachelorette party.

We’re going to meet up at a friend’s house, play a couple games, goof around, then head off to dinner. After dinner we’re going to go back to her house, change into our late night clothes, and go clubbing. What I really like about the club they’ve chosen is that they have great staff. Their security is on top of everything, they card pretty much everyone (does wonders for the ego 😉 ), and the bathrooms are uber clean.

We’re not going out really to drink, though. Mostly for dancing. I’m not going to be drinking at all. The last thing I need is to have a blood-sugar crisis when we’re all supposed to be having blast.

It should be a lot of fun.  😀

.

Yeah, so on another note. I wrote a sad, sappy, happy ending lyrics for a song this afternoon. I’m thinking it would work better on the Country market, but could work in the rock or techno ballad sound. One of my sisters is good at coming up with tunes. Perhaps she can give it a melody.

Writing a song was definitely not on the agenda when I sat down at my computer, but that’s what came out.

I tried to write something else afterward, but was too drained to do anything beyond simply stare blankly at an equally blank new document.

Tomorrow is already a wash for getting any writing done. I have a couple errands I’ll have to run before getting my stuff together for that night, then getting picked up mid-afternoon.

.

Dude! What am I going to wear???

.

Don’t forget, next Friday I’ll be hosting a guest blog from the lovely ReGi McClain.

(Which is just fine. It turns out I’ll be gone that weekend, so she can have the run of the place. lol  😀 )

Happy Saturday!

Hopefully I Managed To Take My Cover Photo Today

27 Sep

I have been planning to get over to my parents’ house to take some photos in their second bathroom for my poetry collection My Ignored Hamper and other Bathroom Poetry. Lonnie and I got there yesterday and figured out what I was going to need, where we could find it, and because our well pump is still being fixed, I took a shower.

Today I got back over there with a bag of clothes from my youngest sister, a couple toys from my husband’s tool shed, and a can-do attitude.

The first step was to set the scene. That wasn’t hard. I found one of their hampers, a couple dirty towels, by chance coming across a brilliant pair of yellow ducky pajama pants, then took some time artfully making the little scene look artless.

I must have take over two dozen photos, and I am happy with most of them. I have yet to really scrutinize them, but from what I have seen in my two reviews, this could end up being a tough choice. That’s a good thing, I suppose. To be honest, I was hoping that one of them would just leap off the screen and scream “I’m the perfect one! Use me!!!” Nope.

This means I will have to go through them all, eliminating the ones that are not exactly perfect in the hopes of whittling down my candidates. It most likely won’t happen in the next couple of days, though. My weekend seems to have filled up. (When did I get a social life?)

Anyway, I thought you guys would like a sample of my photography session.

Today, I Got Yelled At About My Writing (and it wasn’t a bad thing)

26 Sep

My sister just younger than me called this afternoon. She was in the process of making a double batch of double chocolate cookies (that’s just how our family does things), and wanted to talk about one of the projects we are working on. After the first half of the cookies went into the oven she read her latest short story to me. I loved it.

But before that, we had a short, but noisy discussion about my novel-in-the-making, I Killed Them, Mama. Boy, was she loud.

Title I Killed Them Mama in yellow on purple - cropped

You see, I have this terrible habit of getting a good way into writing a novel, then dropping it for something newer and shinier. That is, in a way, what happened with me and I Killed Them, Mama. The going got tough, and the tough got distractable.

After a few weeks of trying not to think about that partial draft just sitting alone, in the dark, in a computer file, my brain started to work on it again. It started to mull over the plot I have laid out. Somehow in the process I became convinced that i needed to rearrange a couple of the larger happenings to make it move smoother. This did not endear me further to this beautiful, exciting piece of hard work. I began just playing with the what-ifs of the book, instead of actually getting down and writing any of it.

Not good.

Back to the phone conversation with my sister. After discussing a good many other things, we eventually landed on the subject of this novel I’m supposed to by working on. I told her the changes I was thinking of making.

Do you know what she said to me?

“The plot works the way you have it laid out. Stick with your original plan and get the dratted thing written!”

I love my sister.

On a similar note, I have discovered that Write or Die has a web version. This may be used in the near future to see if it will spur some more 2,000 word days. It’s worth a try, right?

*            *            *

Also, my cover photo for My Ignored Hamper and other Bathroom Poetry did not get taken today. In my defense, I have obtained shirts and pants from my youngest sister to use as props, and I’ve gotten a better idea of what all I will have to move around in the bathroom to make this work. Hopefully.

Dang it! I forgot to borrow some bath toys.

Oh, well. Tomorrow.

*            *            *

Besides that, I wrote a mutant story yesterday. I’ve laid the groundwork for another one, and in planning this second story I stumbled across an idea for a third. This anthology of mutant short stories and flash fiction may get put together a little faster than we had originally thought. *sigh* Maybe.

Blood Suckers

25 Sep

ReGi McClain has agreed to write a guest post for my little blog! Yay!
To show you why I think she’s cool enough to write something for us to read, I give you this very short story. I giggled when I read it the first time, and again after looking it up tonight.

Enjoy! 😀

Eezzz surveyed the young. Mothers shamed by the birth of sons ushered the boys away. Eezz made a mental note to personally give her condolences to each of them later. Males were, after all, necessary to produce more females, like it or not. When all the males were gone, she spread her wings and flew into the air.

“Daughters!”

Every female within hearing distance snapped to attention. Eezz smiled down on them. A swell of pride filled her. As the longest surviving of all females, she recognized greatness when she saw it. These ones, she thought, they are all survivors. They will all fulfill their destinies. But they needed instruction. And inspiration.

“HUNTERS!”

The girls roared lustily, the hizz of their voices startling nearby prey.

Eezz let the excitement of the moment boil its way through their exoskeletons and settle into expectant silence before she went on.

I Think Something Is Conspiring Against Me Publishing

24 Sep

The last time I thought I was ready to publish I caught a flu that kept me in bed for ten days, and in the house for almost three weeks.

This time, I have chosen the photo I want for my cover (way better than last time, though, so that’s a plus), and have taken a couple steps toward getting it taken and uploaded to Amazon’s cover creator.

Guess what happened this time?

The pump for our well died.

Yup, we currently have no running water… and I’m a slightly OCD germaphobe.

Let that sink in for a minute.

(We are taking steps to fix it, but it’s like a conspiracy to have to visit every dang hardware store in the region buying one or two things from each. grrr)

.

The good thing is that the place I have found the perfect bathroom is actually at my parent’s house. So I may kill two birds with one stone and go take a shower, rearrange their bathroom to take my photos, then clean up after myself.

Ta-da!

Talk about looking on the bright side. (it’s taking some work, so don’t squash it)

I named the book My Ignored Hamper and other Bathroom Poetry after doing a little research about Google searches (brain melting), and also after one of my favorite poems in this collection. So along with my parent’s bathroom, I will be borrowing some little boy clothes and bath toys from a relative and making the room look like a couple little kids just got done taking a bath.

Hence the having to clean up after myself. lol

In many ways I think it’s good that I have not published yet. It has taken a long time for me to feel that I kind of have my feet under me (hey, I said kind of) with this author/publisher/advertiser/business owner thing. There is still tons of stuff still to learn, but to a reasonable extent, I think I am ready to have a book out there.

Now it’s just the technicalities of figuring out those last hurdles — putting links in the back matter, and then actually uploading. *Gulp*

*            *            *

On another note, I am thinking of cutting my blogging days to three or four days a week. I’m still hashing out which days I would want to publish what, so it’s not like I’m changing anything now. This is just a heads up.

*            *            *

On a third note:

You guys have been great. Seriously. This path toward authorship is a tough one, and you have all taken turns to cheer me up and cheer me on. And I just wanted to take a moment to say Thank You for that. It means a lot to me.  🙂

MMM… Scenes from Brain Donors

23 Sep

Wait!

Where did the weekend go?

Oh, well. At least it’s Mirth and Music Monday.  🙂

.

With a lot of searching (and being very picky) I found some funny and clean scenes from Brain Donors, a modern day Marx Brothers parody.

Not a movie I would recommend for children, but one of my favorites.

If you really liked it, and have a blog, why don’t you put together your own MMM post and join the fun?

Either way, go to ReGi McClain’s blog. Hers is the brain that conceived of this crazy fun meme, and hers is the blog that has the linky for all contributors. It’s on the right hand side of her blog. Click the squishy blue face on the top and you will be able to see the full list of MMM bloggers.

Seven No Nonsense Book Launch Tips for Broke Authors

22 Sep

I can use all the tips for broke authors I can get, seeing as how I am putting together a book launch with a budget of zero dollars.

.
Have you considered or used some of these strategies?

.
Do you have other advice for a broke author planning her first launch?

WordServe Water Cooler

Seven no nonsense book launch tips

Sun Shine DownI am launching a book.

My memoir, Sun Shine Down, published at the end of August with T. S. Poetry Press. Eeek!

As a broke, green as the grass in mid-July first time author, I tackled the daunting assignment of launching a book like any other able-minded individual in North America.

I googled ‘book launch.’

In .02 seconds, reputable results-driven marketing and publicity firms jumped into my line of vision. These people surely could launch my book into the stratosphere!

But after some number crunching and a realistic talk with my husband about where hiring a publicist falls in the needs of a family of six (braces, soccer, therapy, FOOD), I conceded. We could not hire help for Sun Shine Down.

These days, whether we sign with a big publisher, a small press, or self-publish, we bear much of the responsibility for launching our own books…

My Friday Night Exercise

21 Sep

*Pant, pant, gasp*

We just got home from the Senior Center dance.

Where’s my water bottle?

My feet hurt, my right calf is about half a step away from cramping, and I couldn’t be happier.

Tonight was the drummer’s birthday. His birthday request was that the cover charge be waived. So tonight’s outing was free. There was the usual pot-luck fare at the 8:30 intermission, plus a big, chocolate birthday cake. (I was a good girl and only stole one bite from Lonnie’s piece.)

The treasurer has just had a minor foot surgery so she couldn’t really get out and dance much (although she did manage a subdued twist). She asked a few of the ladies to take her place and keep her husband on the dance floor. I’d only danced with him a couple of times before. I think he does a country version of a waltz, which I’m not used to, but he leads so well I had no problem following.

So not only am I learning the two-step, but now I am fascinated with this new kind of waltz.

Next week is a western night. They have a special fiddle player coming in from a couple towns over.

This should be interesting, since I don’t own any cowboy boots, or a fluffy, puffy skirt. Although a sister did give me a shirt a few weeks ago which should work. And my black knee high boots should substitute…sort of. I have a denim skirt, but it’s a little too narrow for wearing to a dance.

I do have a pair of jeans that make my butt look awesome, sooo… yeah.  🙂

*Gasp!* And I have a big belt buckle with roses on it!

Yay! Thanks for listening, y’all. I’ve figured out what I’m going to wear.  😀

.

Something interesting happened this evening. I answered honestly when a couple people asked me what I had been doing recently. I straight up told them that I have been working on getting a book of bathroom poetry published on Amazon. Seriously, I thought it was just going to be glossed over with a “oh, how nice for you”. Nope. As far as I can tell I’m going to have to take a box of books to autograph for several people at the Senior Center as soon as I can get things worked around to getting that thing on the print-on-demand option. I was also told that they wouldn’t want them as gifts. They want to pay for their copies!

Mind Blown

So that was an ego boost.  🙂

.

Alright. I’ve had time for the muscles in my legs to quit twitching from the torture. It’s time to take these tired tootsies to bed.

I hope you guys all have amazing weekends! I’m sure as heck am going to figure out a way to have some more fun.  😀
