Writing in Cycles

15 Sep

I think my muse has ADD. Her attention seems to flit from one form of writing to another. One week I will add a dozen pages to a book, the next I have poems spilling out of me, then we take a couple days to pound out a few flash fictions.

All over the place.

I don’t mind being eclectic, that will certainly get me a wider audience, but you have to have something done in order to publish it.  At this rate it will all finish at the same time…three years from now.  *sigh*

Do any of you have a muse who gets bored easily?

One week or day you’re making great headway on something, the next all you can think about is another project?

Have you noticed a pattern to this, or does it just seem random?

I may have to start keeping a writing journal. Just to see if I have a pattern forming,

Not complaining here, really just noticing. It’s an interesting ride, this writing thing. 🙂

I think it’s the same no matter what art form you’re using. I find when making music videos, sometimes there’s weeks between shoots and it’s really hard to keep the excitement going; you want to finish the project off.
As for changing what writing you’re doing it shows you’re doing what you want to do and not doing a project when it’s uninteresting to you. I find that to be the right way to go.

I have also found it best to go where my interest or ‘muse’ takes me for the day. I’ve tried to force it a time or two, but it took so much energy (and rewrites) it wasn’t worth the effort.
It is ‘hard to keep the excitement going’ on some projects. One romance novel has been in the works for over 3 years, another (which is moving much faster) is about six months old. They are both on my mind daily, though, so at least I haven’t lost the love, just a little of the passion.

Holding onto the energy for a project with weeks of waiting would be difficult. You seem to like it, though. Everyone should do something creative. I think it’s good for the soul. Even if someone is an accountant, a musical instrument or community theater would go a long way to keeping them…sane? balanced?

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. 😀

It takes times, I think, to learn how to accommodate your muse without loosing pace in what you should be focusing on. Sort of like making time for a community class on something that interests you without letting it become detrimental to the classes that pertain to your major.

There is a lot to learn when it comes to staying on target, but still being inspired. Many days I fail to even touch on my main project. Things are slowly getting better, though.
I like your example of the classes. Keeping focused on your main, long-term goals while still having space for things that interest other parts of your self. 🙂
